Western astronomy researcher Paul Wiegert co-authored a paper published in Nature which found that for at least a million years, an asteroid orbiting the “wrong” way around the sun has been playing a cosmic game of chicken with giant Jupiter and with about 6,000 other asteroids sharing the giant planet’s space. The report was shared widely by media around the world including, CBS News, International Business Times, The Huffington Post (UK), and The New Scientist.

A study by Chad Walker and Jamie Baxter of Western’s Department of Geography examined communities living with wind turbines in Southwestern Ontario and Nova Scotia. Published in the Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning, the research found the more a community is involved in wind energy planning, the more likely it is that a development will have local support. The research was covered by TVO’s The Next Ontario, CTV News and the London Free Press.

A study led by Western urologist Dr. Blayne Welk and published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that finasteride and dutasteride, common medications used to treat urinary symptoms in men with enlarged prostate, could cause depression and thoughts of self-harm in rare cases. This generated coverage from CTV News and Huffington Post. Coincidentally, U.S. President Donald Trump’s doctor revealed that the President takes finasteride to counter male pattern baldness. This led to international interest in the Western study among media outlets such as The Telegraph and The Daily Mail.
