Western researcher Dr. Julio Martinez-Trujillo showed that our brains are pre-wired to perceive wrinkles around the eyes as conveying more intense and more sincere emotions. This eye-wrinkle feature, called the Duchenne marker, occurs across multiple facial expressions, including smiles, expressions associated with pain, and—as found by these researchers—expressions of sadness. Coverage of the study appeared in CBC, The Irish Times, Daily Mail and The Times of India.

A team from Western’s Brain & Mind Institute led by Jody Culham may have figured out how a Scottish woman who has gone blind is still able to see – but only when objects are in motion.
A brain injury damaged a portion of the woman’s brain at the back of her head, including most of her occipital lobes, which process vision. Culham’s team believes the woman’s brain is trying to find another way to restore some vision. Coverage appeared in CTV News, National Post, ITV News and Fox News.
